John - salt is not used to 'clear' the roads...the plows do
that. Maybe in the border states where road-salt will melt the
snow. We fuss and fume about the salt damage to vehicles BUT we
would fuss and fume more if the ice (which is what the road-salt
is for) caused us to crash our precious vehicles. We have some
of the same kinds of plows as Laurie described and we also have
plain ole salt trucks that rumble in the night as you try to
sleep.

Ellen (we have been below -25 F most of this winter mornings and
only reached a low of -40 F (same in C) twice this winter - the
past three mornings were very bad and this morning, a heat-wave
of less than - 10 (-23 C) so we are basking in the sun :-)
