A little further information on alfalfa as a fertilizer:
Horse feed is just plain alfalfa pellets (not cubes) that you buy in the feed
store. We get them for about $8 for 50 lbs. Rabbit pellets that look the
same have additives such as salt so don't use those.

We (and most people we know) swear by it.
