Indeed strange things can happen.
In the situation of identifying Anastasia (eventually proved false) it was found that the Russian Czar Nicholas and his younger brother had two different sets of mitochondria in their cells. This condition is called heteroplasmy and now believed to occur in 10-20% of people. So if mitochondria comes only from the mother how does this happen, 2 sets that is.
