I don't have borers, but I sure have June Bugs. The larvae eat the roots of many plants, so I don't think they are worth protecting, if it is the same bug I'm talking about.

Hi Linda,
Since the product Merit is systemic and is taken up by the roots and into
the leaves will it hurt the June Bugs? I do not think they feed on the Iris
leaves and the few weeds in the Iris garden. And it is absorbed or melted
into the soil so it is not on top of the dirt for any other critters. That
is why it is applied to the damp soil in granular form. It is totally gone
in less than a day.
In my experience Merit does a good job if you apply it twice a year and be
careful to do it within the 6 month suggested time frame.
I still have all the other flying critters in my yard. Keeping in mind I
have not found anything that likes to feed on the Iris except the Borers and
a couple caterpillars and I hope I don't.

Got an offlist question - why burn rather than pesticide.
Just my preference.
I like my June Bugs.
