Anner: As you know, there are two systems for naming plants, separate but related, the botanical system and t the horticultural system. All plants are given a botanical name. Cultivars have both a botanical name and a horticultural name. The horticultural code is subservient to the botanical code. Cultivars can be written with the full botanical name such as Genus species Cultivar, or Genus Cultivar or just Cultivar. It seems many people get confused when applying rules. The Botanical rules only apply to the Genus species portion of the name and the Horticultural rules only apply to the Cultivar part of the name. Putting an x before cultivars is probably a confusion of these rules. Cultivars may be selections of pure species or hybrids but I dont believe an X is ever properly used to distinguish between the two in the cultivar name.
