Didn't test either.  My experience growing PHOENIX proved that it can  be 
different at different parts of the same yard.  Just on 2 acres.   One spot was 
an old garden space and the other was on top of a hill that has  suffered from 
erosion.  
 
I did start using lime in the planting hole for irises I knew were  
difficult.  Ruffled Ballet bloomed under these conditions but it's sibling,  Moody 
Blue, bloomed without the lime.  Both came from the same  seedling row in MO.
