Week seedlings in the first year of growth can be a maternal effect, such as lack of nutrient in seed.
This is reffering to elements re seed and germination, not something to do with genetics of plant that germinated.
Thus the plant can be weak ?the first year not as a result of anything to do with plant per say.
This maternal effect is usually gone by end of first

you are right Betty.
Strenght is the nb 1 criteria!
At each step of the process, it's much better to discard the weeker ones,
before having a chance to see the flower.
I might saves heartbreaking decisions!
On top of it, it saves a lot of room in the beds!
The last selection being made only among strong irises, there are still so
many criteria to consider, al least the most drastic one is out of the
picture.
