Society here in Region 8 refuses to donate one cent to the region.

How do you overcome that?

Char, I don't think there is anything you can do about it.? It is usually the result of conflict between club members and others from the region.? It happens.?

In Region 23 (New Mexico), the clubs are required to give half of the  
profits from hosting the state convention to the region.  The club hosting
the 
region convention has silent auctions and regular auction of iris stuff and
iris 
rhizomes.  In addition our club donates about $300 to the region each  year.

Then that money is available for start-up clubs.

I thank both you and  Betty for responding.
I know there are plenty of ways to fund a new group.  But I'd be
irresponsible to not ask if there were monies available to help  new clubs.
I was under the impression that Regions did help,
but maybe I  was wrong.

At any rate, I know  or pretty much know how much Judy  Book and her husband
Stan have put into PAIS to get it going, not only  time, but their own out
of
pocket expenses. I just think it might be  something that for future new
clubs it would be nice to know they had the  backing of their local Region
and/0r AIS.
This is a major corporation,  even though non-profit, it is a corporation,
as
I found out when I went to  open my  bank account for group. I've worked for
one of the biggest  travel industry organizations in this country, that tax
wise is a   what you call "Not for Profit"  organization.
So I'm a little aware of  the tax implication of starting a non-profit
though
it is not a "Not for  Profit".
There is a difference. You've also got to understand as an  ex-school
teacher
I know what it is like to spend half your salary on  getting supplies for
your classroom, when there really isn't any other way  to help students
learn


All I was doing was asking, since it had  been indicated to me that some
Regions do provide some help, our's  did.

I've written Jill, Treasure of Region 15, to find out more, but so  far no
response. I'm sure as time goes on I'll understand more clearly what  is
allowed and not allowed.  In the meantime, I just ask a simple  question:
Does anyone know of a region that helps new clubs and what were  the
results.

Our club will do fine regardless.  We really have  lots of eager beavers and
they are very enthusiast.
So I'm sure selling  iris etc and all the other fund raising ideas they come
up with will more  than likely be of benefit. I just felt it my duty to ask
since I didn't  have a clue. So hope to learn more later, but if I don't
ask,
I'll never  know.

When the Miami  Valley Iris Society was still in existence, we had an annual
sale at the  local farmers market, which happened to be associated with the
Metroparks  and held sometimes at a downtown Dayton location and other times
at one of  the horticultural centers within the park. The sale would last
from 8am  until noon on a Saturday, and we usually di it twice, with two
weeks  separating the sale. The sale proceeds were our only income for the
year,  but we averaged 3500-4000$ for the year, at least in the years I  was
involved. All rhizomes were donated to the club from member gardens.  This
gave us more than enough cash to fund our monthly meetings and our  annual
banquet with a guest speaker. All this was with an *active*  membership of
about 15 people.
