<<Neil has now passed but he was very good at breaking complex genetics principles and hypothesis down to something fairly understandable.>> I'll second Christian's suggestion. Neil was helpful to many of us and is greatly missed. He once told me that you don't have to know everything about genetics (the alphabet soup?) to make good crosses. Reading his posts in the archives, would be a good investment of time. Do you have specific goals? Generally, like breed like. Betty Wilkerson . . . in pursuit of impossible dreams . . . one being two orange irises that rebloom early and reliably in my zone 6 garden! -----Original Message----- From: christian foster <flatnflashy@yahoo.com> To: iris@hort.net Sent: Fri, Feb 5, 2010 7:27 pm Subject: Re: [iris] HYB: questions Kathy, The register is a very good resource. If all you want to know is basic ntroduction description, sometimes just posting to this list will get you what ou want... If you want to do involved pedigree research get the register, or he paper version. As far as the alphabet soup question, I'm guessing what you saw on the daylilies as some kind of genotype notation. There are some very involved discussions of ost iris traits that can be found in the archives of this group. Could do with few more discussions of flat irises... but ah well. Go to hort.net/lists to ind those. You could spend many a night reading and re-reading these posts and still not lean the mountainous knowledge that they contain. If you go browsing, just do search for "Niel Morgenstein" (someone correct me if I got the last name rong). Neil has now passed but he was very good at breaking complex genetics rinciples and hypothesis down to something fairly understandable. Which reminds me... As long as we're asking questions... Someone somewhen posted that BC (that's Broken Color) was a recessive a ecessive (plicata). I'll accept at face value that that was a true statement, ut can someone tell me how it's possible for a recessive to have a recessive? hat's a little deeper into genetics than I've ever gone, me thinks. I'm just at the eginning stage where I don't know what I don't know, yet! I've been trying o decide the characteristics that interest me the most, but haven't really een able to narrow the list down very much. I'm definitely intersted in show talks and characteristics. I'm fascinated by the differences in beards. I'm artial to the amoenas and bitones, but like all the others also. Well not licatas as much. (By the way how is amoena pronounced?) I plan to start ith TBs,MTBs and dwarfs, but randomly ordered about 9 pkgs of other seeds rom Signa justs for practice and to see if I could get something else going hat would work in arrangements. So far I guess I do have two questions: How o I get more info about the genetics of the iris I have? I don't have the arents of all that I have. Most are recent introductions since I am just tarting the garden. Where do I get he alphabet soup to go with the characteristics? (Aaa, BB, etc.) I noticed hat kind of information about daylilies a day or two ago on iris digest, but t was too advanced for a beginner, so I mostly skipped over it. I'm sure hat info is available for Iris as well, I just don't know where to look for t. I've read "The World of Irises". Now what? hanks, athy aka Iris Milkduds .S. I was thrilled to hear that I could introduce from Signa seeds with redit to Signa. If I should be so lucky, I would have questions on the etails of that later. --------------------------------------------------------------------- o sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the essage text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS --------------------------------------------------------------------- o sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the essage text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS
