I've tried a number of ways to mark irises and crosses over the years...

Plastic markers worked well until the chickens entered the garden and
thinking
they were pieces of bread, pulled them all out and scattered them.

Paper tags didn't last through watering much less a season of weather since
putting bags of any kind over some of the more delicate species isn't an
option.

For the past 10 years plus I've used plastic flagging tape of different
colors
cut into fine strips. It stretches just a bit so allows for growth; is
perfectly weatherproof; doesn't attract the attention of chickens or cats;
and
is easy to knot. 3 rolls of different colors (at about $1.50/roll) have
lasted
over 5 years.

Each pollen parent is assigned a specific color with a series of knots and
end
treatments (notched, angled, blunt, etc.) . All notes on codes and crosses
go
into each year's notebook. By the end of the season, some codes are so
familiar I don't have to look them up to tell which crosses took.
