Sibling to sibling from an F1 =F2. Siblings of F2 crossed =F3. Would they not be F2? and their children F3? Otherwise, no point in calling it F1. A designation used to help identify generations in line breeding. For genetics, used to identify genes, and their function, dominance etc. Or for hybridizing, pulling out recessive traits. Of course these can be positive and deleterious genes.Chuck Chapman-----Original Message-----From: Betty Wilkerson <autmirislvr@aol.com>To: iris <iris@hort.net>Sent: Fri, Feb 22, 2013 12:32 pmSubject: Re: [iris] HYB: trying to learn some genetics terminologySo . . . the crosses Rick Ernst did with Edna's Wish & Wild Jasminewere true F2 etc.?Betty WilkersonZone 6 KYautmirislvr@aol.com-----Original Message-----From: Chuck Chapman <irischapman@aim.com>To: iris <iris@hort.net>Sent: Fri, Feb 22, 2013 10:55 amSubject: Re: [iris] HYB: trying to learn some genetics terminologyF1 is original parental cross. F2 is of siblings, and only ofsiblings. A cross used in genetics to assess recessives. Used in plantbreeding to pull out recessives. The F2 and subsequent F3 etc, are allsibling crosses. That is F3 is F2 X F2.Two parents from different linesis always a F1. Cross of cousins is also F1.Chuck Chapman-----OriginalMessage-----From: Linda Mann <lmann@lock-net.com>To: iris<iris@hort.net>Sent: Fri, Feb 22, 2013 11:08 amSubject: Re: [iris] HYB:trying to learn some genetics terminologyThanks Chuck. After postingthat, I did some more reading and have a bitmore understanding of theterminology. Best summary was on the JacksonLaboratory mouse breedingwebsite. Is there nomenclature for offspring of F1 of one line X F1 ofanother?Or is that just a plain ol parental cross, with seedlings ofthat crosscalled F1?Same question for (a x b) x c. I'm guessingseedlings from that crossare also just an F1.I understand backcross andoutcross, but are there terms to use forintertwined pedigrees? cousinscrossed? nephews/nieces X aunts/uncles? Inbreeding, but is there aterm for the offspring (and please don'trefer to hillbillies..;-) )?On2/22/2013 6:59 AM, Chuck Chapman wrote:> F2 is always crossing of twoF1.>> Chuck Chapman>> -----Original Message-----> From: Linda Mann<lmann@lock-net.com>> To: iris <iris@hort.net>> Sent: Thu, Feb 21, 20139:15 pm> Subject: [iris] HYB: trying to learn some geneticsterminology>> F1 & subsequent generations.>> Online definition says F2is > The progeny of self-pollinated F1> generation plants>> But I'vealso heard/read F2 used this way:>> The F2 (second filial) generationconsists of the offspring from> allowing the F1 individuals tointerbreed - the grandchildren of the> parental generation.>> So whatdo I call the offspring of two related F1 seedlings that are not>siblings, but are part of my non-line breeding program? i.e., crosses>between half sibs, cousins, etc.>> I was assuming that any 2ndgeneration away from the parental one was an> F2, but looks like that'snot the way F2 is normally used.>> Linda Mann>>------------------------------------------------------------------- -->To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the>message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS>>------------------------------------------------------------------- -->To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the>message text UNSUBSCRIBEIRIS---------------------------------------------------------- -----------To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with themessagetext UNSUBSCRIBEIRIS---------------------------------------------------------- -----------To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with themessagetext UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with themessage text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with themessage text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS
