Well, then. . . if we want the information, we have to put in the work. But I find myself going back sometimes, looking at things such as colour on back of petals, beard colour distribution, purple leaf base, coloured hafts, width of falls, branching points etc. etc. Chuck Chapman -----Original Message----- From: Betty Wilkerson <autmirislvr@aol.com> To: iris <iris@hort.net> Sent: Mon, Feb 10, 2014 12:53 pm Subject: Re: [iris] HYB: record keeping (was punnett squares) In the case of seemingly identical seedlings of no value, maybe take a picture of one with comments that there were XX number of seedlings similiar to this one.? Each cross is labeled, but it would be really nice if each individual seedling had its own ID tag to photo along with the bloom, but that seems to be more than I can keep up with. I've tried to do that some years with very poor success. I can manage rebloom (so far, not an overwhelming number of them), but not spring bloom. Do you have an easy way to ID individual seedlings during maiden bloom? By variable crosses, I mean those that don't produce seedlings that are more or less indistinguishable from one another, i.e., 25 identical seedlings from (Golden Immortal x Doctor Alan) X HoM. ugh. After trying various ways of keeping records on rebloom, I've found that what works well is carrying a pocket full of pieces of window blind and a couple of china marking/grease pencil. I use more than one, expecting to lose at least one. I make notes on date stalk is first seen, then can add more bits of blind with more observations as time goes on. Still haven't gotten myself to record those notes on paper, but it's actually more helpful to have them in the garden when I'm out making last minute plans for crosses.
