Re: favorite self-colored Irises

Tom: I took a day off work to work on the local iris newsletter...but this
siren song keeps calling me (e-mail, e-mail)

In a message dated 96-02-05 15:07:06 EST, you write: What are some good
examples of the following:

Tom...I can recommend the following without reservation:
>
>WHITE: Laced Cotton (Schreiner '80) is always good....in the garden and on
the bench. It's a cold white with good substance....always impressive.

>BLUE: I've grown Critic (Innerst '87) for years, although I wouldn't call
it blue (the registration book does). It's 'blue' like Silverado is 'blue'.
Just cooks along and grows a magnificent clump in no time.

>
>VIOLET: How about orchid? I LOVE Extravagant (Hamblen '83)...it's got it
all, blocky form, great rosy orchid color...ruffles and lace - and it's often
the last blooming in my garden (kind of like the fireworks display when the
fair closes) For a dark violet, I like Neil Diamond (Nelson '87)...rich
color, very sophisticated.

>BLACK: Before the Storm (Innerst '89): The definitive black
>
>BROWN (?)
>
>RED - hope someone can recommend a ruffled red. Seems like the color tends
to be richest on tailored flowers....Spectacular Bid, et.al.
>
>ORANGE or PEACH - I used to grow 2 of the "Fresno" series of
oranges....Fresno Frolic and Fresno Flash. One grew like wildfire -
stunning! The other did not. Of course, I can't tell you which is which...
>
>PINK: My favorite. Femme Fatale (Gatty '88) is wonderful....very clear
pink, lighter in the center of the falls. The best in my garden now,
however, has to be Shirley M (Ev. Kegerise '95) My friend and I were able to
purchase this iris in '94 so we're ahead of the game. It's a blue-bearded
pink....very feminine, very nice in every way.

So, Tom...those are some of my favorites. You ought to think beyond TB's
though...I think there's nothing to compare with Lady Day and Pink Bubbles.
Pele is an orange SDB...Maui Moonlight fairly GLOWS at dusk!
