Hello Pat and John! I recognize your name, John, from the Gardens List.
Just got on today. As to your questions, Pat, if we are talking about
bearded iris give your rhizome at least one square foot, preferably 18
inches, from anything else. In 1-3 years, depending on the variety, the
space will be filled and the clump may need dividing. I have chosen to put
all my irises throughout my perennial beds but others like them alone, some
mixing colors, others making a dramatic statement with just one large
planting of one variety. Do what will give you the most pleasure. No rules
apply except good drainage and shallow planting, i.e. the rhizome should be
on the surface or just below, the roots spread out. Irises are quite hardy
but I have no idea about how they fare in places like southern CA. There
are many iris growers on the west coast, so I expect you won't have
problems. You might call one of them, e.g. Schreiners or Cooley's, and ask
them. Also, you must have their catalogs because they are incredible.
Schreiner's is 1-800-525-2367.
