Re: Greetings

Hi Cheryl in the Finger Lakes and Connie in Ohio. This is a brand new
robin/list/chat or whatever the proper term is...and YES, we are serious
iris-philes here. I know Connie from the Daylily group and we've had many
iris conversations - I can hardly wait till spring for HER sake (nothing like
discovering a new passion!).

Cheryl, you're in my own Region so you have my complete attention. The "iris
breeder" you mention who gives you rejects...would that be Dana Borglum?
He's on Seneca Lake (I have his 'rejects' too....one of them received an
exhibition certificate at our show last year!). You might be disappointed in
rebloomers in our Region...we just don't have a long enough growing season
for most (for anyone who has not deleted this - we are in New York
State...aka Artic Circle, North). There ARE some...and Clarence can tell you
what they may be.

As for mapping and labeling (keeping track) Here are some hard lessons
learned:

1. Don't plant similar colors together. When they grow into each other or
the labels are scrambled, you'll have to toss the whole mess into the
'orphan' bin. Besides - planting similar colors together washes them
out...irises look best in happy confusion!

2. Don't use one method only (labels or maps) You won't have a backup when
the inevitable happens.

3. Don't believe it when they tell you something is indelible. All things
are 'delible'. I find that one of those cheap labeling guns works great (but
is a pain when you have a lot to do), the best is probably laser printer on
horticultural plastic or a P-touch on a zinc label.

4. Don't worry, be happy! We are all here because we love a flower...so
don't allow me, or anyone else, to bog you down with so many rules that the
joy is sucked out of it! My number 1 rule is THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN!

You awake? Sorry for the long post.
