Re: Pardon My Ignorance

Hello all,

Indeed, there are enough acronyms floating around to choke a horse.
I always though computer people, particularly unix wizards, were bad but on
reflection -- iris lovers rank right up there!

Here is an expo on HIPS

The Historic Iris Preservation Society was created to help preserve
our iris heritage by locating 'at risk' irises and bringing them together
with irisarians who want to grow and perpetuate them. Of equal importance
is the establishment of an extensive collection of reference material
relating to early iris history.
HIPS is the common thread that binds together irisarians
everywhere. A membership in HIPS will offer you much more than two copies
of 'ROOTS' each year.
To help you enjoy and learn about our iris history, HIPS sponsors a
number of Display Gardens in various parts of the United States. A booklet
listing these gardens along with hours of operation and detailed
instructions for reaching each one can be obtained from the Display Garden
Chairman.
You can also "see" older iris through the HIPS slide rental
program. Use these slides for iris society meetings, garden club programs
or for your own pleasure and information. For information, contact Slide
Chairman Joan Cooper, 212 West County Road C, St. Paul, MN 55113.
For those who enjoy writing and getting letters, participation in a
HIPS Robin gives you the opportunity to regularly communicate with other
irisarians whose interests are similar to yours.
To assist you in purchasing specific older irises, the HIPS
Commercial Source Chairman maintains a large file of catalogs and
commercial listings and will attempt to locate a source for the irises you
wish to acquire.
The HIPS database contains non-commercial sources for more than
4000 irises registered 30 or more years ago. This service can put you in
touch with individuals who are willing to provide you with irises that are
not commercially available. Annual sales and auctions sponsored by HIPS
give you yet another opportunity to obtain that longed-for antique iris
cultivar.
Correct identification of iris you have or that you may acquire,
greatly increases your pleasure in growing them. HIPS boasts experts who
can help you to correctly name that unknown iris from grandmother's yard.
To further assist you in iris identification, HIPS offers reprints and
xerox copies of early iris reference material. These contain good
descriptions of popular irises of yesteryear and are available from the
HIPS Publication Sales Office.
Far too much of our iris heritage is already beyond recovery. Each
new HIPS member gives us another chance at preservation. With your help, we
can stem the tide. Don't let the old ones slip away!
