Doug, Most of the Japanese woodblock prints depict Iris laevigata which is a
true water iris. The development of Iris enstata (the Japanese iris) in
Japan very much paralleled the development of tall bearded irisis in France,
i.e. really started in the 1st half of the 19th cent. Thus, one seldom finds
"the Japanese iris" depicted in older woodblocks. Of course, it has been
much depicted in woodblock prints in the 20th cent. Interestingly, the iris
we know as the Japanese iris is not mentioned in any of the classical
Japanese literature, although I. laevigata is mentioned often. Clarence Mahan
