I've used the 10-12 inch zinc rose markers for about 7 years now along
with the trusty DYMO tape machine. I leave the markers out year round
and the ones that 7 years old are still fine. This is a pretty tough
test of durability, considering the very harsh weather we endure
here.(very hot summers, very cold winters)
I use the original DYMO brand tape. One advantage of this method is
that even if the colour on the tape fades, because the lettering is
raised you can still read it and know which iris variety is which.
Also they aren't as prone to heaving out of the ground with the
numerous freeze-thaw-freezes that we
have in our area. (zone 6b, Canadian zone system) I heartily endorse
the making of a map of your plants. Could save you grief sometime
down the road. Just like insurance, you don't know ahead of time when
you will need it. Finally, iris people really don't like to get a
mis-named iris! I personally would hate to give someone a misnamed iris
so I take special care in this area of identification. Enough from me for
now. Next?
