labeling irises

I wish there were an ideal system. First thing: label AND map. The
duplication is the only way to avoid disaster. Regarding the labels
themselves, most people use metal labels (plastic breaks after a
season or two). I usually mark mine with labelling tape. It's not
permanent, but it seems to endure longer than any of the "indelible"
markers I've tried. I also use some plastic labels and do use marking
pen on some (mostly plants other than irises). My garden is small
enough that I can replace or renew broken or faded labels as I notice
them.
