n _The World of Irises_ has its problems too, one
>of them being that it is now twenty years out of date. Another problem
>(for the beginner) is that this book shows all the marks of being written
>by a committee of experts, which is both a strength and a weakness. It
>could use a bit of ordinary garden talk somewhere to orient the
>newcomers. As it is, we get a pretty technical excursion into taxonomy,
>followed by several chapters on the historical development of tall
>bearded irises, which reads a little like the "begats" in the Bible.
>I'm glad somebody wrote all this stuff down, but I wonder if it's
>really the first thing a new reader needs to be hit with upon opening
>the book.

i was a beginner when i bought world of iris, and i loved it, despite out of
date and black and white - sat down and read it cover to cover. but i was
already obsessed...
