tom - i finally had time to read some of the older messages and found the
survey request from the early days when there apparently was some worry we
might not find enough to talk about. these are my favorites in the color
categories. i have chosen most because i have grown them and they do pretty
well here- the ones with * were some of the very few that survived a vicious
late freeze to be well represented in the first iris show i ever attended
(lebanon tennessee)- . that show had a lot of very old flimsy varieties, but
few recent moderns, to the exhibitors' great distress.
white - CUP RACE*, WINTER OLYMPICS, ICE SCULPTURE (tolerates frost in bud)
blue - VICTORIA FALLS*, an unnamed older ruffled light blue, I. pallida, SONG
OF NORWAY
violet - historic no-name (help, HIPS),OPENING ACT, (most others rot)
purple - DUSKY CHALLENGER, NIGHT AFFAIR, CRUZIN, ORBITER
black - NIGHT RULER (grows slowly, but i really like this one)
brown - GINGERBREAD CASTLE (the only one that has ever bloomed here), (i have
not tried CABLE CAR*)
red - lots and lots: RUBISTAR, SULTAN'S PALACE, VITAFIRE, probably LADY
FRIEND* and CHERRY SMOKE, both new this year
orange/peach - JOYFUL NEWS, MONTEVIDEO
pink - by far VANITY*, APRIL IN PARIS
yellow/cream - CLASSICO, SKY HOOKS
keep in mind, these are from the rot zone.
