Well, most of these are pretty old--but that's the way it goes. It takes
awhile to get a consistently favorable impression of an iris, I find.
''Red''--that is, what passes for red in irises. I still like VITAFIRE. Not
spectacular here, but consistently dependable; a good garden iris. I'd put
LADY FRIEND on my favorite list, too. Not as many bloomstalks as Vitafire,
and a different 'red', but also a very good performer. And RASPBERRY RIPPLES
just can't be beat for a reliable 'raspberry' red color.
Blues--My favorite. SAPPHIRE HILLS is still one of my most dependable, and
blue-bluest. PACIFIC PANORAMA is also still in my garden; a little less
blue-blue, a little less reliable, but still good. I like PACIFIC MIST also.
A different, wisteria blue; dependable bloom and multiplies well. I have
to put CODICIL in here, too, though with it's dark beard, I guess it's not
really a self. But an outstanding garden iris!
Purples--Often tough to keep here, they tend to be borer-bait and rot-prone.
EVELYN'S ECHO has lasted, along with TITAN'S GLORY and BLACK DRAGON.
"Black"--I still like STUDY IN BLACK. Its tailored, trim blossoms are "neat
as a pin."
Pink--VANITY wins, hands down. Reliable, floriferous, and vigorous. A
personal favorite for it's different, kind of blue-pink coloring is ol'
PRICELESS PEARL. (Does anyone else still grow it? ). I have to admit it's
getting a little doggier-looking to me every year, but I still keep it.
That's it! I guess I need to try out more yellow, white, and orange irises.
