Gunnar: I think it's wonderful that this list has gotten to the point where
we need to mention our country! Kathy Guest here, from the Buffalo, NY area,
USA. Zone is somewhere between 5 and 6 (depending on the winter)
I'm going to give you the Iris 101 answer to your question... then the iris
scientists can give you the right one. Very basically, the difference
between bearded and beardless iris is that one has the beard (fuzzy structure
on fall) and the other does not. Very generally speaking, bearded irises
like neutral soil and rather hot, dry conditions... beardless like their ph
to the acid side and they prefer moist conditions (Japanese Iris being the
extreme...). Examples of beardless iris are siberica, ensata and louisianas.
Now my question: I have a friend in another robin who is marginally
interested in Louisiana irises. He lives in Florida and I would like to
encourage this interest by getting the best color catalogs I can (and any
good publications) sent to him. I am looking for recommendations to that
end. What about the Louisiana section? I know some of the sections are
more developed than others... Please let me know ASAP before I lose his
attention.
Thank you
Has everyone gotten Joe Pye Weeds catalog? I am obsessing on the two sib
intros - anyone seen them in the flesh?
