Re: Iris breeding

In a message dated 97-02-06 09:35:22 EST, you write:

<< read in the AIS Bulletin that there are from 800 to 900 registrations
annually. Do all of these varieties represent improvements over their
parents or existing varieties? Seems unlikely. In fact, comparing
pictures from THE WORLD OF IRISES (1978?) with pictures of today's
varieties, I can see no overall improvement, if anything just some slight
refinements. In other words, for TBs at least, not much to show for 20
 years of development. >>

In response to your belief that there has been no overall improvement in
TB's over the last 20 years, I say that you need to get down and really look
at the iris. By point scoring the iris at the Loomis Garden we look at every
aspect of the iris. When doing this up close and personnel evaluation, you
would be suprised at the many things you find that are trully improvements in
iris today. Stop being just an iris tourist!
