Mark, I think you must be right.  From further description of the rhizome, my 
guess of Acidanthera would be ruled out.  Oh, well...

     Upon reading the more detailed description of the plant referred to as
"African Iris," I can determine that it is NOT a type of Neomerica.  Most
likely, it is either Moorea or Dietes.  I am not familiar enough with
tender plants to distinguish between the two.
