I was also born in the 40's, and made hollyhock dolls in Kansas.  I was 
shown how by my mother who was from Idaho.  Hollyhocks, irises and roses 
are the flowers that I remember from my childhood.
Last summer, I showed two 6 year old neighbor girls how to make hollyhock 
dolls in Richmond, VA.
