burrowing rhizomes

Another novice question:
In clearing the TB bed I've found several rhizomes that during the hard
rains of winter seem to have burrowed down into the neat ridges I carefully
planted them atop, so as to leave the rhizome exposed (as we are counseled
to do here in humid Ark). Now the whole foot of the rhizome is under dirt,
which worries me since I've already got soft rot on NIGHT AFFAIR.
Is it OK for me to dig these fellows now and reset them (maybe atop a
half-inch or so of sand). Do I need to wait until summer or fall? What if
they get sick before then?
