Sawdust from home construction is very fine compared to sawdust from a lumber
mill that saws logs into rough lumber. And hardwood sawdust from a lumber
mill is finer than pine sawdust. The finer it is, the more likely it is to
pack down into a dense surface almost impermeable to water and air once it
dries. The Couturiers at Sunnyridge Gardens in Knoxville routinely use
lumber mill sawdust to heavily mulch their commercial iris beds - right up to
the rhizome and occasionally spilling over on top of them. The are on a
ridge top on not very good clay soil (shallow acid shale type). They do
rotate their production beds regularly with their daylilys. I think they use
hardwood 'dust'.
