     I believe the answer to this question is as variable as the number of
people who grow iris ans the soil they are working with as well as the
cultivar they grow under the given conditions of that season. What , when and
where! I'm sure there are some answers more true in most situations and family
groups but no absolute answers for all of us. But that is only my thought for
right now, ask me in the spring when I can observe in person what is happening
in my garden this year with the particular iris I'm having trouble with that
particular day, the answer may have differentiation from today.
