We have been using this practise in dogs for many years.  Works well and
you can almost immediately guess the parentage of a puppy named this
way.   Of course, it is not required only a frequently used custom. 
They also name litters (siblings) on a theme.  Could get as interesting
in iris as it has been in puppies.
