Does it matter who offers
the iris for sale, or does public offering in anybody's catalog constitute
introduction? Does it require any kind of consent of the registered
hybridizer or may somebody who bought it legitimately from the hybridizer at
some point later offer it for sale (introduce it?) without further resort to the
hybridizer? I ask these questions with a specific cultivar, TRANQUILINO,
in mind. It was registered by Gene Gaddie sometime in the mid-late 80s, I
believe, but never introduced by him. I saw it in gardens at the
1990 AIS Convention in Omaha and decided I wanted it but could not find it in
any catalog. Despite my urging, Gene didn't introduce it himself in any
sale offering, but a few years ago it was listed in Roger Nelson's Iris Country
catalog. Now, is it's status that of "introduced" or
not?
