Hi Linda,
I just got home this evening from California and found your message. When I
first wrote, I didn't have any references available. The following is from
the 1992 Dwarf Iris Society Check List:
AZUREA (Origin unknown). DB, 5 in. (13 cm), EE. Slightly grayed
light blue bitone; creamy white beards; obvious stems. Probable natural
hybrid between I. lutescens and I. pumila. [Listed in A.I.S. 1939 check list
with the synonym "pumila azurea."] First listed by Clibran (England) 1881.
HC (RHS) 1927.
Note that I. lutescens is a synonym for I. chamaeiris. I. pumila normally
has no stem, therefore the fact that AZUREA has a stem indicates that it
isn't pure pumila. The fact that I. pumila and I. lutescens have overlapping
habitats leads to the belief that AZUREA is a hybrid between the two.
