Chris H replies:
Hello there. Catherine, I know exactly what you mean in your e-mail. Now for
others who may not know what she means please read on...
What has happened here is that someone has tried to send the list an message
and as you all see by the postings, was unsuccessful in projecting the
message to at least some of the audience. I read the message no problem. The
point is that many could not.
TIP: If you are sending info into an unknown environment or a recipients)
(for example this iris-talk list) with whom you may not be sure of their
operating system (Windows or Mac or Unix for instance) or programs (MS Word
or Corel Word Perfect for instance) then simply do the following: cut and
paste the info such as was sent in this message into the body (main message
area) of an e-mail. Simplest solution and everyone that receives it can read
it no problem.
Also note that those receiving their messages on One-list digest format do
not receive any attachments. So again in this situation the attached message
is not communicated.
Do not assume that everyone has the same software or even the same version
of the same software unless you specifically ask or are in a corporate
situation with software standardization. (Corporate situations where
everyone is on a standard set of software is a different situation for info
sharing). Why is it important to have the same software if you exchange
files in the native/proprietary format (MS Word for example) ? Well unless
you (the sender) have the same as the recipient, that recipient may have
varying degrees of difficulty reading the file. Indeed they may see nothing
at all!
So DO make the correct assumption that everyone has DIFFERENT software on
their computers and send your messages appropriately as I outlined in the
TIP above.
Trying to keep it simple... better stop here. Hope you all can understand
the point here...
Send your message in a form that communicates...
