Patricia,
Your failure was purely coincidental to the report that appeared here. The
virus (and its variants) are passed along via an attachment (not allowed
here) and the user must open the attachment in order to be infected by the
virus. A good anti-virus program, properly updated would stop that
infection from happening.
You can save yourself a lot of worry if you simply do not open attachments,
especially those you are not expecting. Save the attachment, then scan it
with your anti-virus software, then open it, even if it is one you are
expecting that particular attachment.

I'm posting this message as a reply to John Jones' 12/14 message that
Dave Silverburg had called him to say his computer had a virus that
he was afraid he might have passed on to iris-talks, presumably on
his last post (12/9: message 24501.
I read that post, so I may have read Silverberg's too, and the same
day, because I logged on, read my e-mail, read iris-talks, then
signed off for a few hours; and when I tried to log on several hours
later, I could not. Windows wouldn't come up. I've had my computer
in for service for the two weeks since, got it back Sat. 12/30.
Did anyone else experience such a failure, or was it coincidental to
Dave's virus?
