Betty and Walter,
EDITH WOLFORD, JURASSIC PARK, and other of that ilk represent a different
expression of pigments in the falls than occurs in the "traditional"
Variegatas, which derive their red-broen-purple tones from the simultaneous
expression of both yellow (anthocyanin or flavonoid(?) piigmetns and
anthocyanin. The purer blue-violet tones of EDITH WOLFORD et al implies
that the yellow pigments are absent or much reduced in the falls of these
cultivars. They are definitely derived from different breeding lines.
I would classify MICHIGAN PRIDE as a Variegata, even though it has
prominent haft marks.
Though I would say that Plicatas are not Variegatas, I consider the term
variegata-plicata as useful as amoena-plicata, bicolor plicata or
neglecta-plicata to distinguish some of the patterns that began to emerge
from various breeding programs in the 1970's.
According to these guidelines, if that is what they are, JOSEPH'S COAT
(Katkamier) would be a broken color mutant of a Variegata (HONORABILE) and
AGGRESSIVELY FORWARD would be a variegata-plicata.
