Dallas' list of websites for Dietes is interesting. As she said, the
names are often confused. For example, some of the pictures are
labelled Dietes vegeta. This is not listed as a species in Innes.
Goldblatt at Missouri Botanic Gardens has written a monograph on the
African irises but I do not have a copy. D. vegeta might be a new
species but I expect that it a name made up by someone. As to the other
species shown, apart from the most interesting Australian D.
robinsoniana, one has to be careful between iridoides and grandifolia.
My guess is that most of the Dietes planted in landscaping sites in
California are actually grandifolia although the pictures and
descriptions in Innes do not allow a clear separation unless one has the
flower to hand.
I grow these plants in pots and bring them in in October. They flower
in the sun in late August and September and continue in doors through
October and early November.
Ian, in Ottawa where there is about 4ft of snow at the moment and he is
wondering why Americans pronounce Missouri as if it ended in ......ra?
