A while back several people discussed mixing sand into soil to loosen it.
A friend of mine who is a retired Texas Agricultural Extension Service person
wrote this in the newspaper. He does a weekly hort. article. "When mixed
into clay soil, sand eventually makes the soil more compact rather than
looser. Geologists say that no matter what type sand you use - - river,
brick, or lava - - it eventually will turn soil into something like concrete.
The microscopic particles of clay fill in the pores in the sand, and when
this happens, the soil becomes harder and more compact than it was before the
sand was added. It just takes longer with coarse sand." Add compost
instead, he says.
His wife grows reblooming iris now that I have gotten hold of her.
