Neil, to me, it says the iris carries rebloom genetics, and it is one step
ahead of the reported ''rebloom carriers." When crossing these with
"hitchhikers" or moderate climate rebloomers to irises that rebloom reliably
here in KY (there are many that will) I get a higher percentage of rebloom
seedlings than if I cross the same iris with a spring only iris. The latter,
rarely creates a rebloom seedling in the first generation. The former
can/does create some rebloom seedling.
When I find such a stalk in an introduced iris, research usually reveals the
cultivar has been reported to rebloom in it's home territory--often by the
hybridizer.
