Re: OT-BIO: Ronald Leger - Canada

Similar to what others have said, (by the way, welcome) Siberian iris are
trouble free in your area. However, just as a person vaccinates their dog
for distemper or parvo in areas plagued by those illnesses most tall bearded
iris can be grown in zone 4 and up with proper preventive measures. Your
decision is to what extent you want the bother for the pleasure. Here in the
Pacific Northwest we get about 40 inches of rain between Nov-June and the
temperature seldom rises above 50 degrees Fahrenheit making an ideal climate
for rot. Yet many of the major iris breeders are in this area.
My suggestion would be to contact Schreiner's, Cooley's, Mid-America,
Aitken's or Keith Keppel or Meeks and tell them where you live and ask what
measures they take to control rot. Another thought would be to ask local
iris fanciers which iris they grow.
Just as daylilies have crown rot many tall beardeds are not trouble free.
