Re: HYB: CULT: germination

The year 2000 was a real bummer year for germination because
there was no winter to speak of at all - El Nino in all of his glory!

2001 was the greatest year for germination in recent memory.
Although it wasn't terribly cold, it was a sustained cold from
November through February which made all of the difference.

2002 was a so-so germination year.

Nothing has germinated for 2003 yet, and our winter has been like
the year 2000. The lowest temperature has been 26o, followed by
rapid warm-ups.

Today is like a spring day again with beautiful sunshine (not a cloud
in the sky) and there is not a whisper of a breeze. I should be
outdoors raking pine straw, but have been refilling three bird
feeders instead Swarms of goldfinches, chickadees, and titmice
emptied all three feeders yesterday. There is an occasional visit
from a noisy, downy woodpecker, who also likes to rat-tat-tat
on the garage gutter and downspout.

So goes winter and iris seed germination in Baja Tennessee.

Looking forward to receiving catalogs but vowing NOT to spend
somebody's inheritance this year.
