Betty, I appreciate your problem.  Our soil here is clay also, though it
is brown and alkaline while yours is probably acidic.  I has to be
constantly amended with silt and compost.  A raised bed is probably a
good idea where you are.  Here it requires more water and water is
scarce and expensive.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I can't get anything to grow under a
pine tree.  Pine trees seem to have some inhibiting factor whether from
the needles they shed or from the roots, I don't know.  I do know that
planting a pine tree in a yard here guarantees a large bare spot.

Anyone with additional ideas? All remedies considered.
