I've not had pine trees in my yard before. Maybe that's why I haven't had 
much luck with my Hostas.  I thought it was just the shade, even though they 
do well in shade. I gardened around Walnuts for years and didn't know pines 
did the same thing.  The iris beds aren't directly under the pines.  The 
irises seem to grow alright.  We have a lot of wind and the needles drift 
into two of the three beds.  The bed on the other side of the house even gets 
them.  The needles land on the roof and then the high winds blow them over 
and into the bed.

I've also got a Maple tree that I fight in my small yard.  Crazy roots.
