HYB: seed germination experiment

After seeing the photos of seeds germinating after 4+ months in
refrigerated paper towel burritos, and not seeing any germination of my
seeds after 3 months in the fridge, I decided to put the rest of the
seed flats from the early batch of experiments (fresh seeds, not soaked,
some refrigerated 2 months others 3 months) outdoors in the cold frame.

Seedlings already in the coldframe that experienced overnight lows in
the single digits F last week look like they came thru with no damage.
There was a bit of snow for insulation which probably helped.

They may not have snow for this week's cold temperatures, but I will
stack more water-filled cola bottles on top of the frame for extra
insulation/heat storage & keep my fingers crossed.

It won't be long till the main batch of seeds which are now in the
fridge in burritos will be ready to plant. It will be interesting to
see if storage/drying, then soaking before refrigeration improves
germination. For a few crosses that did not germinate in the previous
experiments, I will leave some seeds in the fridge for 4 months to see
if that makes any difference. I think I have enough seeds for replicate
trials of a few crosses.
