That's the key.  In southern NM, late blooms dry to the consistency of tissue 
paper before they can fully open.

Strictly hearsay -- yes.  The house where I grew up had some perennial beds 
that had been planted decades earlier, including one of paperwhites.  The 
previous owner said she'd planted only the white ones in that corner, but 
although they still dominated the area there were also a few clumps showing 
differing degrees of yellow.
