Re: AIS: Flight Lines

I agree with Lowell and I will add that as editors we should
always try to obtain permission before publication of anyone's
words on an online mailing list. However, I also must confess
that I was crushed for a deadline a couple of issues back and
needed a filler and included a thread from the Siberian e-mail
list without individual permission..I think I did put in a
blanket post saying, "Does anyone object to insertion of any
posts?" No one objected. But I also will be clear anything
quotes in upcoming issues. It is only the polite thing
regardless.

I am mindful of Walter's comments about folks not wanting to
contribute online for fear of being quoted in a pub. It can be
disconcerting (at least in the past on the old iris-l with some
different characters and personalities) to post and then have a
sharp rebuke online or at least fractious comments aimed at the
poster. That sort of thing should be taken to private mail and
even then we should keep things in perspective. This is "only
about a flower" as someone said years ago on the old iris-l
before she quit the list (with good reason).

*Having said this, the internet is public domain...the iris-talk
and most of the flower lists are accessible to the general
public. John and others, can it be 'used' without permission?
Many times, online photos do have a notation that permission has
to be granted for use..what is the lowdown on all of this?
