Well, I'll take the bait.
I'm probably not the right one to reply, because I started this thing, and
because I don't like many of the cultivars that have come out since the
30's or so, I'd take an older blue over Babbling Brook any time, and I
think I'd favor Babbling Brook over Sea Power.
However the two look grossly pretty similar to me; both with full ruffled
form, neither is old fashioned looking at all. I think I like Babbling
Brook better, it is more graceful and pleasing to the eye. Sea Power is a
bit darker (thats' nice) and the ruffling is stronger (not nice), I'd say
overdone, seams the falls might hold a flared out position a bit more (not
nice), the standards are a bit smaller (not nice), in other-words, getting
less "iris-like". Gee, it really is an ugly thing isn't it! Just call me
a rebel, or perhaps old fashioned is a better way to say it; mmm, kinda'
funny to use those to describe the same thing. I tend to think that both
cultivars would fit right in among a 2003 crop of new cultivars (at least
to my undiscerning eye). If I was sorting Iris out on over-all looks, I'd
put them pretty close together. Can't compare vigor or behavior, since I
don't have Sea Power. Looks like Sea Power has a nice rich blue color
though (too bad the blues usually come out closer to lavender on film).
Now, if you want a great old-fashioned blue, there are Catarina, Celeste,
Missouri, Sierra Blue, and Blue Rhythm! Now thar 's some perty Iruses.
Hope there's no snipers lurking about.
Dave
