Here I am!
sorry, things way crazy this past month or so...kids and I sick for many
many days but better now and I'm just getting around to checking mail...!!
to Griff:
Sorry I took so long to respond, in fact, can't find your original post.
Lesseee...
I still grow about 200 iris back in my "sandy pit" of a yard. Lots of
amendments to the soil when I plant. Less than a foot down it's almost completely
sand. Those that have adapted fairly well and are reliable for spring
bloom: Moon Journey, RAmeses, Furioso (IB), Honey Glazed (ib), Afternoon Delight
(took some establishing), Summer Olympics (will sometimes rebloom too) ,
Radiant Angel, Sailor (ib, blooms regularly but not profusely), Orageux (also ib),
Little Egypt (only mtb that works here), Blazing Sunrise (most of time
rebloom too), Hell's Fire, Douce France, Lady Juliet, Wild Jasmine, Golden Muffin
(ib), Ride the Wind (not profusely but every year), Crimson King, Skyblaze,
Mohr Pretender, Pink Betterment (those last two arilbreds). Other spring only
bloomers increase ok, bloom sporadically but can't let them go.
Of the rebloomers, these bloom spring and fall here very reliably:
Winterland, Winesap, Blatant, Dark Crystal (although not profusely, its an sdb),
Being Busy (manages one or two blooms twice a year but I love it), Istanbul,
Dashing, Sky Queen (an oldie), Harvest of Memories (somtimes skips spring but
might be it's location), Misty Twilight, Autumn Tryst and Belvi Queen, and Coral
Charmer used to be good but skipped rebloom this year. Many, many more still
only on second year here so we'll see...
Very trial and error here, some appear to do well for a year or two then just
pffft, dissapear either from heat or lack of winter...or something. In
general, Schreiner and other Oregon things don't work out, except CHANGE OF PACE
which has been fabulous and SUGAR MAGNOLIA which never blooms profusely but is
usually reliable and gorgeous...best bets tend to be California-bred or other
warm climate bred varieties. Only a handful or less of sdb's ever stay long,
not enough cold. Of course, that never stops me from trying more... Let me
know if that helped or if I can answer any other questions.
