RE: Hyb; Luminata & Zonal

There certainly is a relationship between them But first, What is Clarence? At first glance for me I would say it's a Wide zonal & amoena. For me a wide zonal is a zonal with an extra wide zonal spot. Don Spoon claims Clarence is a luminata & amoena. His cross of Clarence X Mind Reader would give some merit to that thought.
Luminata appears to be a combination of 3 glaciata genes and one luminata gene. I have known for some time that luminata pattern is a heterozygous genetic combination9 a mix of alleles). When Keith crosses two luminatas he gets glaciatas and luminatas. Same sort of results reported by many other. If Luminata was homozygours (ie four sets of the same allele eg; 4 luminata alleles) the luminata X luminata would produce all luminata, which is not the case. Glaciata X luminata does produce glaciata and luminata, the exact ratio will need some good counts of these results. This strongly suggests that luminata is one luminata and three glaciata alleles. Glaciata X Luminata ,by this theory should produce half glaciata and half luminata. Some seedlings are on the way, some hopefully enough seedlings to give a good count.

This then leaves the question of what a plant homozygous with luminata gene would look like. I suspect that it is the zonal. Zonal have been kown to be related to plicata for many ages, with Bob Schreiner writing an article on this quite some time ago, 60's or 70's. Fo me a wide zonal would be one glaciata gene and three luminata alleles. Thus Clarence could still be a wide zonal as a wide zonal X luminata would also produce some luminatas. I woulsd like to see this cross repeated with a count of offspring to get a better idea of what is going on.

In the meantime I have about 100plus plicata crosses involving luminata, zonals and many different combinations to see if I can fill in some of the gaps in knowledge of plicata genetics.
