Re: Solicitations

I've no problem if people wish to voluntarily contribute to... anything!
However, is it necessary to add another cost to the AIS budget to support
only iris-talk? Should they discriminate between a number of real good
iris forums on the web? Although hort.net is a growing garden site, so does
GardenWeb have a large iris forum, and it offers different features... 1) it
keeps the thread of the topic together... so if you post to a single thread,
you can see everyone's comments on that topic without going to archives.
2) They offer a huge number of both garden topic related forums and a huge,
really huge number of specific flower forums. 3) In addition, they allow
photos to be posted with the messages, which can be helpful if you want to
see the iris quickly. And all of this doesn't have to fill up your home PC
mailbox and hard disk... it is really simple to go to their web page and
scroll and vist all recent messages. GardenWeb invites subscribers to make
contributions, but also are supported by commercial iris and garden sites
which are linked to their pages.
And if you're interested in participating in a iris photo database, check
out Dave's Garden network at
    http://iris.plantsdatabase.com/star.php
The point is, there are going to be a number of good iris sites on the net.
If many are self supporting, do we need to add the cost burden of one which
may not be self supporting to the AIS budget? I want to see iris-talk
continue, but I suspect going the route of voluntary or subscribing
contributions is the way to go.
