> Pigment distribution is generally seperated into oil and water base and
its generally its true that never the two should mix. Howerever I have seen
exceptions that are very intriging. Red on white plicatas and such things
such as red striped on white as in MTB have both yellow (oil) and blue
(anthocyanin, water base) pigment distributed anong the same channels.
Allthough thisain't so according to what we know, its definatly true. I've
done pigment extraction and also seen enough of the petals where one
pigment is repressed to confirm this. I also have several series of photos
showing this in past posts to Iris Photos.
> I have also seen a good number of SDB plicatas of both my own and a few
from Paul Black that show some blue ground plicatas. I have been refering to
these as plicata independent anthocyanin. At this time I'm chasing down the
posibility that there is a fourth plicata allele that looks much like the
regular plicata allele but effects pigment distribution somewhat
differently. I'm suspecting this allele to have come from Iris variagata.
Test crosses and pigment research procedes. The yellow pigment that is
distributed with anthocyanin may may be a water based pigment such as one of
the flavanoids.
